How Do I Reset/Change My Password?

This article will walk you through the process of resetting your password using the various options available.




To begin resetting your password, please visit

On this page you should see the following 3 options:

  • Password Reset (Which allows you to reset and create a new password for your Saint Peter’s accounts)
  • Update Profile (Which allows you to customize your challenge questions, add e-mail and SMS authentication methods as alternate ways of validating your account)
  • Account Unlock (In case you simply need to unlock your account and not reset. Please note that Spirit Online will not unlock with this tool but will do so on it’s own within 15 minutes)

*Note for the scope of this document, we will only explore the “Password Reset” option.

1.  Under Password Reset column click on “Go to Reset Tool”

2. You will then be asked to enter your SPU Username. Please enter it and Click “Continue”

3. On this page you will need to select a method of verifying your identity, in which you have up to 4 options:

  • Authenticate with Active Directory
  • Authenticate with Challenge Questions (Preferred option for first time users)
  • Authenticate with SMS (Use “Update Profile” shown in step 1 to add functionality if it does not appear)
  • Authenticate with E-Mail  

Click on the circle next to the appropriate option and Click “Continue”

4. After selecting Authentication method please follow the appropriate steps.

  • If you selected “Authenticate with Active Directory” (use this if you know your current password, and it has not expired)
    • Click on the drop down menu at the top and select the appropriate account
      • STUDENTS.SPC Network – Blackboard – SPIRIT Online is for students
      • SPC Network – Blackboard – SPIRIT Online is for faculty/employees
        • SPU Network is not in use at this time. 
    • Enter your SPU User Name:
    • Enter your current password
    • Click Continue
  • If you selected “Authenticate with Challenge Questions” (use this if you do not know your current password, or your password has expired)
    Please enter the relevant information requested. By default the following are created for you.
    • What is your SPIRIT ID number? (All 7 digits including zeros)
    • What is the month and year of your birth? (MM-YY)
                   Note* the MM-YY format shown mus include the dash
    • What are the last 4 digits of your SSN?
  • If you selected “Authenticate with SMS”
    • Select a phone number and provider
    • Click the “Send Pin” button
    • Enter the pin code  
  • If you selected “Authenticate with E-Mail” (only use this if you can access your email!)
    • Select the e-mail you would like a pin code sent to if more than one appears.
    • Click “Send Pin”
    • Enter the pin code sent to your e-mail.
    • Click “Continue”

5. After successfully authenticating using one of the above methods, you will be able to create your password:

When creating a password,the following requirements must be met before hitting the reset button:

  • You will be asked to re-enter your password – both passwords must match.
  • Password must be at least 8 characters in length.
  • Password  must be no more than 14 characters in length.
  • Password  must use at least 3 of the following 4 rules.
    (Please note we recommend using all rules shown at least once)
    • At least 1 uppercase character(s).
    • At least 1 lowercase character(s).
    • At least 1 number(s).
    • At least 1 symbol(s). (Such as a ! or – is recommended)
  • Passwords cannot contain your first or last name
  • Do not use passwords utilized in the previous 90 days. (We recommend them to be completely unique)

6. On the final page you should see the results regarding the password used:

  • All the categories should be listed as “successful” when resetting your password.
    • If there is an error in the status field, the issue may be due to lack of password strength for that service. We recommend going through the process again and re-evaluating the password used or creating another unique password that closely follows the instructions provided.

Note* In any instance that you get a XML error, or any other error message, your session may have timed out and you may need to go through these steps again.
